What are Rich Pins?
Rich pins on Pinterest basically add more information to pins generated from your website. There are 6 types of Rich Pins: app, movie, recipe, article, product, and place. Rich Pins are fancy pants high-quality Pinterest pins that display your website name and favicon underneath the pin. This gives a nice clean professional look. Have a look at the picture below and you’ll notice that they all say “from Jams and Scones” underneath, and also have my site’s whiz-bang favicon. I have article pins for my blog but you might choose recipe style pins or product pins depending on your site and needs.
If you'd like to find out the difference between the 6 different types of rich pins check out this post from Pinterest.
Why Do I Need Rich Pins?
Aside from the fact that they look really cool? If you’re a brand on Pinterest (and you are a brand if you have your own blog/business/retail site) then you need rich pins – here's why:
1. Automatic Updates
Whenever you change something on your website, for example, the price of a product or adding an ingredient to your Recipe this information will be automatically updated on the pin as well. No manual changes needed!
2. More useful information
Pinners/users can easily see additional information about the pin making it more useful and relevant. Higher Visibility: Product images, recipes, and movies have a lot to compete with on Pinterest so ensuring that they stand out a bit more is a no-brainer. In a user’s home feed, rich pins will include the name of your business as well as your logo underneath the image.
3. Free Price Alerts
I think this feature is one of the best Pinterest add-ons. If you decrease the price of your products by more than 10% Pinterest will send an automated email about the price drop to the people who pinned your product. This is all done for free! This is fantastic if you have a product based business and keeps your pins relevant indefinitely!
Just imagine if your product was pinned by 500+ people and you dropped the price by over 10%… 500 price drop notifications in your potential customers’ mailbox.
4. easier purchasing/information
It’s always important to keep things simple for the consumer and rich pins allow you to do that by listing price, availability, link to a purchase page or source, ingredients, movie reviews, downloads and more.
Easy Peasy Rich Pins
I could get all complicated on you, but I'm going to take the process right down to basics. This method assumes you are using the WordPress platform for your site and you have upgraded your account to a business account.
Step One: You Need the Yoast SEO Plugin
YOAST is the search engine optimization (SEO) plugin that I use and highly recommend. Pinterest is all about SEO – similar to how Google works as a search engine. To be found in a search engine SEO keywords must be inserted throughout your blog’s title, post, and descriptions. The amazing thing about YOAST is that it will tell you if your post is SEO “friendly” or not. This makes your life SO much easier!
So now, that you have downloaded and activated YOAST, go to the “social” tab under Yoast’s settings. Make sure the box is ticked next to “add open graph meta data.” This allows you to look at your data, aka track your Pinterest traffic!
Step Two: Go to the RICH PIN VALIDATOR
Once you are at Pinterest’s Rich Pin Validator, enter a valid URL from ANY blog post on your site. It doesn’t matter which one, just pick any of them. Once you've done that, click validate.
Step Three: Apply For RIch pins
After validating, you should see a message that says “your pin has been validated!” Then, click “apply now.” A pop up will come up with your website’s domain and “HTML tags” selected. Click “apply now” again. That’s it!
Next, you will be playing the waiting game while Pinterest approves your application. Mine was approved within 3 days but I've had friends who had them approved in minutes. Once you are approved, your pins will automatically display your website’s name and favicon and you will have rock star pins!
I hope you found this tutorial useful and I can't wait to see your new rich pins in action. Go ahead and share a link to one of your pins in the comments below when you get them setup!
